imsoemo asked:

do you get a club length to place the ball at, or is the club length where you drop the ball at, and when do you get a penalty stroke for going out of bounds?

You get a drop, but you will lose a stroke. So, this guy above me is right on the money.

if a ball goes out of bounds you replay the shot from the spot you last hit it with a penalty. for instance you tee off and hit it OB. your score is 1 + the penalty stroke + you re-tee it so you are hitting your 3rd shot on the hole. there may be some special rules at the course (local rules) but in general that is how it works.

you definitely do not get a drop.

I wish it was a club length!

Unfortunately, out of bounds is quite penal in golf. You are not only penalized a stroke for the infraction, but you also have to return to where the stroke was played and rehit it.

In order to save time, however, if you THINK your tee ball went out of bounds, you are allowed to hit a “provisional” ball that you can play if you verify that your first ball was indeed OB. Then you can play your provisional ball, lying 3.

That means, you are hitting your 3rd shot off the tee if you hit your first shot OB … ouch…

OB left, aim right. OB right, aim left. The price is too steep to take the risk.

You play a ball from where you just hit it but with a shot penalty. So say if you hit you second shot out of bounds you will have hit for two, the you would drop for three, and you will be hitting your fourth. So what ever shot you would have been hitting you add two to it, so if youve hit your 5th shot you would then be hitting your 7th. And if you hit another one out of bounds after the you have dropped you will add another two onto your shots.

Yep, loss of stroke AND distance. Replay the shot from where you hit it out of bounds and add that pesky penalty stroke.

1. you can take a drop with a 1 stroke penalty where the ball went out, but no closer to the hole.
2. if its a tee shot you can go back to the teebox and hit a new tee shot with a 1 stroke penalty.

Simple answer. Out of Bounds is stroke and distance, meaning you hit from the original spot, but now you’re hitting ‘3′ instead of ‘1′.

Seems many people here are getting this confused with a lateral hazard where you can drop two club lengths from the point of entry in the hazard, no closer to the hole. In that case you’re also hitting ‘3′, but from (hopefully) much closer to the hole than the OB shot.

Ok let my answer be final confirmation that OB is DISTANCE & STROKE. That means you are penalised with a stroke penalty and play from the same spot that you hit the ball to OB.

There’s no such thing as 1 or 2 club length from the place where you ball went into OB.
