hit the fairways and make your putts.
watch out for birds
Just keep calm. Do not listen to anybody who try to be coach. Play to your handicap. Address the ball calm. Just forget you’re in tournament. Play to your game and follow the rules and etiquette of Golf. That’s all.
Keep your head down, Swing full, follow through, and drive when you can.
Wow fifteen with an 11 handicap im 19 and have about a ten handicap and started when i was about fifteen. But dont let the pressure get to you. Just have fun don’t think about winning. If you hit the ball off the tee good and can make some putts you will be great. But go out there and do what your doing now because 11 handicap is great. Just go out there and go from a 2 or 3 putt to a one putt and save yourself a couple of strokes. Its hard to play golf and be consistant but sounds like your doing alright and you will only get better. Keep in mind that this is your first tornament don’t get upset or flustered, there are some really good players in the tournament and you can only get better. Just keep playing and you will get there trust me. Good luck
When you start the tournament you can’t be worried about anyone else but yourself. I know this might be hard but if you get caught up in worrying about other people you are not going to play good. Just remember everyone there is worried about there game even if they don’t show it, I mean there not perfect and they don’t know how you or the other people you are pared up with play. Also make sure you get a good warm up. I would spend more time on the putting green than the driving range so you can get the feel for the greens.Just make sure you feel relaxed and ready to go. On the first tee you might want to take a little longer than normal to cool your nerves but maintain a nice steady routine through out the day. Remember you are there to learn and have fun. Good luck!!
i know it’s easier said than done but most importantly is to have fun and relax as much as possible. Learn as much too from the experience. Good luck!!!
First of all Congratulations! Next, and 11 handicap is not to shabby, so you should do just fine with your shot making. The following are a number of random thoughts that I am kind of pitch you as I go, (Since I do not know the format, for example is it metal play or 4 man best ball?) Anyway here we go:
1. First of all : Know the rules of golf. In a tournament, if you ask anyone but a judge or an official for a ruling or a call on what is allowed or not allowed, you lose a stroke.
2. Make sure you count the clubs in your bag before you start. You are allowed 13 – and no more. If you have more you are penalized 3 strokes.
3. Mark your balls. If you “accidentally play another Players ball, you loose stroke and distance for penalty, and must return to the tee. Also, make sure you have enough balls in your bag to finish the tournament – you must play with what you start with, – if you run out along the way – you forfeit.
4. Drive for show, putt for dough. You do not automatically have to pull the driver out of the bag for every par 4 or par 5. You have to “manage” the course. Understand when it is best to layup to a certain point , so you can use a full swing into the green, or to clear a hazard. And to that end, make sure you know what yard each club will give you with a fulll swing.
On a 335 yd Par 4, (today the hole is playing 352), that is a “slight” dog leg right, with a bunker on the right side of the fairway at 260 yards out, and a creek at 210 yards from the tee that bisects the fairway. The creek is only 5 yards wide, coming in from the right – then breaks towards the green as it crosses the fairway, then makes a hard right and runs up the left side of the fairway, (in bounds),. almost up the the green, where it goes out of bounds. The sides & back of the green are surrounded by sand bunkers. The fairway slopes down hill from the tee about 20 yards to the creek, and then back ou about 25 yards to the green. The green is large and two tiered. Today the pin placement is on the lower (front) shelf – about 1/4 back from the front of the front edge of the green. The breakpoint in the two tiered green is the middle of the green from side to side. What is your strategy for this hole?
How about this: I get 175 yards out of my 7 iron. Today I tee off with the 7, playing it back in my stance, (I want to minimize roll on impact as much as I can. Approach shot: I check the yardage to the pin – 170 yards. I load up the 7 iron again, – I want to hit at the base of the slope or on the slope of the dividing slope between the upper and lower portions of the greens. Nice shot! Right over the flag stick , the ball hits the base of the slope , goes up the slope 2 feet and backspin carrys the ball to apoint about 3 feet below the hole. I birdy the hole. I was last up Everyone else used their drivers off the tee. One OB – right. One in Creek, – center of fairway. One in Fairway Bunker on right.
5. The Bag. This advice is probably too late for this tournement, However, avoid the first mistake most amateur and week end golfers make, (in my opinion), – they go out and buy a beautiful set of matched metal woods and irons, – usually for way too much, and usually they end up buying about 50% of clubs that they don’t use or can’t hit.
My own bag is a mix of clubs that I love. the oldest club is a ‘52 Hogan 56 degree wedge that I found at a garage sale. The point is, I can hit every one of those clubs flawlessly withy consistentcy, day in & day out – and I can tweak shots out of each one as I wish. I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THEM.
I am not identifying what specific brands I carry but this is what I usually tote:
1 offset putter
3 wedges 56, 60, 75 degrees
9, 8, 7, 5, 2 irons
metal woods 5, 3 & driver
and one utility fairway metal wood
6. Keep up the pace! Following you set up routine on the tee is fine, and settling in for your fairway shots, bunker shots, and putts is proper, – but this business of taking 5 minutes and walking around the green 5 times everytime you putt is sheer nonsense. Stop it. THe game is in front of you – not behind. Stay, (at a minimum 2 shots behind the group in front of you. There should never be a reason to have to let someone play through. Walkers should be able to play just as quickly as thouse in carts. By the time you get to you ball, – (especially if it is on the fairway or visible in the light rough you should know the distance to the pin, the wind conditions and drift, the trajectory of the shot, the elevational difference to take into account, and the club selection, and be ready to make your shot. That’s another thing – When you are on TV in a PGA event, or around the green ready to chip, ior on the green ready to puttm, then by all means it is certainly proper – mandatory to take turns – long man out first. HoweverIf you are on opposite sides of the fair way, and about even – with NO WAY of endangering anyone in your group, or distracting them – then go ahead and advance your ball that one less delay in the game.
7. Bring Money. Be a Good Buddy. Buy a round of sodas & candy bars, – or two. Come with some fresh jokes to share. Complement your companions on good shots and commiserate with them on the errant shots – cheerlead if someone gets down, (if it’s a team event). What you are doing is supposed to be fun – do not forget that. If you, or someone else in your foresome is having an off day – change the order of play,
8. If you Hit a bad shot, STOP. Before you get angry at yourself, ask yourself why you shanked that shot. Is the pace too slow? (A lot of tournements like you are going to be playing in are what I affectionately call “Death Marches” – I’m talkin 5 1/2 hour rounds here!!! And that is sometimes why you start hitting the occasional bad shot – you lose your rythum and have a hard time getting it back. When this happens – MAKE SURE that before each shot you follow your routine, and take a few extra practice swings, and KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME. When play becomes slow, I find that I subconciously play too fast, – it’s like I think that if I pick up the pace – then somehow EVERYONE will magically pick up the pace. Pretty stupid huh?
9. If you are going to miss a putt miss it LONG, never short, If you miss it a little long – at least it HAD a chance of going in.
10. The speed, and even the gain of a greens will change as the day passes – so make sure to adjust you putting accodingly, – especially when you play those green which have stood in shade all day, and you just played 3 exposed greens and now you come into a tree shaded green – or you will wind up short.
11. If you are playing in sandals or tennis shoes – go get some good soft spikes, (YES they do make a difference).
12. Re-grip your clubs every year.
13. If you have a favorite club that all of a sudden you are not hitting well. Take it out of your bag – and work with it on the range later.
14. This tournement is not a long ball contest, (although there maybe one hole set up for longest drive), anyway – now is the time for control and a fine touch, and not a time to swing for the bleachers. The harder you swing, the less control you have. The staying on thje fairway & the short game is where you win tournements.
15. If you are playing in a 4 man scramble format, (where all 4 drive and you use the best drivem and then all 4 take a fair way shot, and you use the best fairway shot, and then all take an approach shot, and you use the beat a;proach shot of the 4, and so on (with putting too). The your strategy is to have the best and most consisten golfer go first to get to “safe” and in good position, and then the rewst of you can “go for it”.
16. Be a good sport, be courteous, treat the course and the greens keepers with respect. Replace your divots. Always fix your ball marks and 3 or 4 more. Use the port-o-potties, pissing on the tee is not cool, – it’s disrespectful. Carry your trash with you, and pickup any you see, and carry that with you to & dispose of it properly.
17. Drink a lot of water and gator aide or power aide, ( about a quart to a quart & 1/2 an hour), bring and use your sun-screen, sun-glasses, and a hat. Also a good Idea to bring a camera – get some buddy shots, (you can have some blow up poster sized, or even have transfers made for tee shirts – great gifts for later.
18. Remember these things are for fun, if you happen to win – that’s great, – but the idea is to be out in the summer sun, playing golf with your buddies, so relax, and enjoy the day!
Good luck, I’m pulling for you.
Win it, and you’ll feel great.
stick with your routine, visualize your shots before you step to the ball, take all things into account (heat, cold, wind, uphill, downhill) – slow things down and think clearly – you’ll do fine
